Americans are fat, fake, and uncultured

This is the view that I perceived of Americans when traveling in Europe recently, and I can't say it's completely false. I wish all Americans had the chance to go abroad and see how other people lived and take a minute to look at themselves.

 Americans are fat

We all know there is an obesity problem in the U.S. We see it on TV ("Biggest Loser" reality show), in the news about all the obese children, and all the fad diets that are perpetuating in the media. An outspoken German woman on the flight over to Europe spelled it out simply - all the processed food we eat. You see, in Europe (and many other areas of the world) you go to the store more than once a week so you always have fresh fruit, vegetables, and bread. You would be hard-pressed to find much "light" or "fat-free" Healthy-Choice-type food in their supermarkets, yet they're not gaining weight like Americans are. It's because they eat food in moderation, and likely, because the food is fresh and doesn't contain all the preservatives. They also sell most things in small packaging, meaning that you either will have to use less of it or come back frequently. Either way, you'll probably shed some calories.

Americans are fake

A European friend of mine once it explained it to me like this: Europeans are like Oranges - they may be rough on the outside, but are sweet on the inside. On the other hand, Americans are like Peaches - they seem nice and friendly on the outside, but are hard on the inside. I liked this because it's true - in capitalist America we try to be the most customer-friendly people but really we are just trying to up our profits. In our views and actions too - we say that we are eco-friendly if we own a recycling bin and buy energy-saving appliances.  But we forget that we also drive around gas-guzzling SUVs, don't sort our own recycling (in Europe they have four standard bins in public places), and continue to build huge homes and have huge appliances for all our huge Costco-size food.

Americans are uncultured

You probably know this already, too. Most Americans' only exposure to foreign cultures is high school Spanish class. Granted, we are not surrounded by very many other countries (I counted two), but we are also ignorant and expect when we go to other countries that they will speak English and cater to Americans. I was not surprised when I saw a sign at an Italian restaurant that said "No Tourist menu. Locals only" spelled in English of course. Listen to the news or watch a TV show and you will notice that we rarely ever mention anything that is not related to the U.S.

3 - Obesity in America has to do with our lifestyle, more than with processed food vs. fresh foods. I live part of the year in the U.S. , Europe and SE Asia, and I see the differences. In the U.S. hardly anybody walks. The typical American commutes 40 or more miles a day, and the only exercise he/she gets is walking from the front door to the car, and from the car to the elevator. But this is what we wanted, no? Live in the suburbs because inner cities became uninhabitable, and drive our fat(tening) butts around in an SUV. :-/ (Comment this)

4 - The most americans Ive met were fake and superficial in their relationships to other people. They talk twice to a person in a bar and they already call it a friend. (Comment this)

5 - Found this while looking for something else and felt the need to comment.

You do realize that you are stereotyping ALL Americans based on your limited experience of 25 years on the planet? I don't drive an SUV, I sort my recyclables and I take pubic transport or bike most places. I live in a small, almost 100 year old house.I am not fat or lazy. I do work about 200-300 hours more per year than most Europeans - most Americans do you will find.

How much of the US have you seen ..and how much of the rest of the world? How can you embrace this "fat American" thing without any personal experience? Every country has it's fat and uncultured people. Most Europeans can pick out NY on a map, but are very ignorant of the rest of the US or any detailed US history. They rey on what they have been fed - just like those who watch FOXNews in the US. If you go to any country their news and shows cater to their population - as they should. Every country writes and produces entertainment for their own citizenry. Read Bridget Jones Diary - they drop a lot of British phrases and store names....so what? Why is the same thing a bad thing in regard to the US product?

Part of the obesity crisis is real - but again, everyone is getting fat, not just the US - and part is media hype. The numbers are gleaned from BMI measurements - which are highly inaccurate. Most Olympic athletes would be considered overweight based on their BMI which focuses on height and weight only - not an accurate measure as it does not measure actual body fat.

It might interest you to look at the carbon footprint of many European countries - they miss their CO2 emissions goals all the time.

Stereotyping makes people sound like idiots, regardless of the land mass they were born on. Do some research rather than just take things at face value.

Americans are not perfect - but then again, no one is. Many Europeans disregard American cultural norms - such as friendliness... they don't see it for what it is and substitute their own viewpoint...which frankly is disrespectful and bad manners. It is the same as going to France and expecting people to speak English. One needs to be a bit open minded and see the other cultures point of view...even if they happen to be American.
